Days after India summoned a German diplomat calling the remarks against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest “blatant interference”, the German Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on Thursday heaped praise and exuded confidence in the Indian judicial system.
Stating India as an important partner in Asia, the German Foreign Ministry said, “The Indian constitution – and I can say this from my own perspective as I was posted in India myself – guarantees fundamental human values and freedoms. And we share these democratic values with India as an important partner in Asia.”
After facing backlash from India, the German ministry said, “The topic was discussed with the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday. Let me emphasise once again that we – India and Germany – have a great interest in closer cooperation and together in an atmosphere of trust.”
However, questioning the quantum of action against the US and German diplomats as they were summoned over the remarks, the German Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said, “I would be reluctant to talk about confidential, internal discussions here.”
Earlier on Saturday (March 23), a German foreign affairs spokesperson had hoped that the “standards relating to the independence of the judiciary and basic democratic principles” would be applied in Kejriwal’s case.
“…Like anyone facing accusations, Mr Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and impartial trial. This includes he can make use of all available legal avenues without restrictions. The presumption of innocence is a central element of the rule of law and must apply to him [sic],” the spokesperson further said.
Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor policy case.
