Tripura Police recenelty rescued a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped last year from the north eastern state’s Kailashahar area. The girl was rescued from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on Monday, an officer said.

The accused, who allegedly kidnapped the girl, was also arrested and produced before a local court. Meanwhile, the girl was handed over to te family.

The police launched an investigation to find the girl based on a specific complaint filed by her father and for the purpose it deployed a scientific method along with the use of cyber technology.

The victim’s presence was spotted somewhere in Ahmedabad Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Kailashahar, Jayanta Karmakar told PTI.

“Accordingly the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, Sub Inspector, Pompi Nath was sent to Ahmedabad to rescue the girl. With the help of Gujarat police, our officer rescued the girl from a locality in Ahmedabad. We were also able to arrest the man who kidnapped the girl from the same place. Both are taken to Kailashahar safely,” the SDPO said.

The girl was kidnapped by the  man on December 18, 2023.

Amid rise in cases of minor girls’ abduction, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha last year said that the state ranked highest in the number of child marriages.

In 2019, an international study report found that Tripura occupied the second position in India in child marriage among girls aged 15-19, “at 21.6 per cent, which is significantly higher than the national average.

The report, which was prepapred based on the National Family Health Survey data, also found that over 80 per cent of the child marriages in the state took place in rural areas of three districts.
