The lone Aam Aadmi Party Lok Sabha member Sushil Kumar Rinku joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday along with party MLA Sheetal Angural, dealing a blow to the party.

Angural was elected to the state Assembly from the Jalandhar West constituency. The MLA, along with Jalandhar MP Rinku, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and its national general secretary Vinod Tawde.

The Jalandhar MP said he was joining the BJP for the development of Punjab, especially his Parliamentary constituency, and accused the state’s AAP government of not helping him in development work.

Rinku went on to add that he was impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and lauded the Union government for its development initiatives.

Just days ago, Rinku’s name was included in AAP’s first list of eight candidates for the Lok Sabha polls from Punjab and was fielded from Jalandhar.

The Parliamentarian had quit the Congress to join AAP last year to fight the by-poll to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat.

The BJP is likely to field him in the Lok Sabha polls as the party inducts a number of influential leaders of different parties in Punjab to emerge as a strong force in the state with 13 constituencies.

Sushil Kumar Rinku, the lone AAP Lok Sabha MP, was suspended from the House during the Monsoon session of Parliament for unruly behaviour and creating ruckus over the Manipur violence issue in August last year.

He was suspended after he threw papers at the Chair after the Delhi services bill, or the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed in the Lok Sabha.
